Underground City 21

A Discourse Programme at the Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom in Vienna. From 5 to 9 October.

[E] The Fragmented City and the Disappearance of Public Space

Along the course of the simulated Underground City 21 in Vienna we will be meeting guests with special knowledge in talks, at-table-situations and lecture performances. This is part of a discourse programme that takes place over the course of the period. More extensive talks and lectures are taking place at the larger meeting points, Theater Nestroy Hof and Lab Factory.

The Forum Discours-Dramaturgy had its first public appearance at Volksbühne Berlin and is being hosted in Vienna for the first time, moderated by Natalie Driemeyer and Jan Deck.

Entrepreneurial self on stage

The entrepreneurial self, flexibilisation, self-optimisation, authenticity, work, intrapreneurship, patchwork-biographies, lifelong learning… neo-liberal discourses of the flexible self…

For Berliners: Der flexible Mensch* is appearing in a very amusing and thought-provoking project Entgrenzung (by Frank Oberhäußer) at the Schaubühne’s Studio stage. Only two more shows: 13 and 14 March. Highly recomended.

*Der Flexible Mensch is the German title of Richard Sennett’s (1998) The Corrosion of Character: The Personal Consequences Of Work In the New Capitalism.

Alice in Wonderland

Žižek has had his influence. Impossible to watch Alice in Wonderland at the Kammerspiele in Berlin’s Deutsches Theater tonight without thinking of Althusser’s interpellation. The play provides a beautiful example of interpellation when the rabbit refers to Alice as his maid:

Why Mary Ann, what are you doing out here? Run home this moment, and fetch me a pair of gloves and a fan! Quick now!”

In the play (although not in the original book), Alice then contemplates what this means for her identity. She isn’t Mary Ann. Mary Ann is not who she is. But then, if the rabbit calls her Mary Ann perhaps she is Mary Ann after all. Etc.

Lovely moment in a nicely absurd play.
